Chariot Energy Solar Buyback Overview

Chariot Energy currently offers 4 solar buyback plans in Texas across Oncor (Dallas) and CenterPoint (Houston) utility territories. Chariot Energy does not offer 1:1 buyback. Export credits use real-time wholesale (RTW) pricing tied to the ERCOT market, plus fixed-rate options. Fixed export credits range from 3.0¢ to 7.0¢/kWh, with RTW plans at real-time market rates. Export credits can offset your energy charges, base fee, and TDU delivery charges. Plans are available in 12 to 36-month contracts with base fees from $9.95 to $29.95/month. Restricts annual net exporters from receiving buyback credits.

Chariot Energy uses real-time wholesale pricing

RTW export credits are tied to ERCOT spot prices, which can swing from $0.01/kWh to over $1/kWh. Your monthly credits will vary significantly based on market conditions — a sunny afternoon during a heatwave pays well, but mild spring days may pay very little.

What makes a good solar buyback plan?

The best plan matches your specific usage patterns. Look beyond the marketing and check:

Timing: When you export vs when you consume power

Credit method: 1:1 credits, fixed rate, or RTW—and any monthly caps

Gotchas: Base fees, credit expiration policies, and minimum usage charges

Most providers hide how their plans will perform with your specific usage—our analysis shows you the truth.

Real reviews from Google

Low buyback rates

I have an 11.47 kW solar system on my home in Missouri City and switched to Chariot Energy earlier this year thinking the 15.3¢ fixed rate plan was a good deal. On paper it looked competitive compared to Reliant's buyback plan I had before. What I didn't fully realize was how low Chariot's solar buyback rate actually is.

Poor customer support

Stay far away from this energy provider. As a first-timer of any energy plan/solar buyback customer, I was taken advantage of rather than supported. The plan was poorly explained, no effort was made to ensure it fit my needs, and once I realized it wasn't right, there was zero guidance toward a better option.

Plan changes

I signed up with Chariot solar buyback a few years back and things were great for a while. That is until they decided that I was producing too much energy and tried switching my plan to one less beneficial to me. To their credit, they let me out of my contract because of this change.
